From ColecoVision to iPhone Games - Some High Water Marks in Video Game Design History - Part 10

In this advancing, game review, attending at cogent moments in the history of video bold design, we accept already taken a attending at Bungie's, game review, Halo & Halo 2, Bethesda's Elder Scrolls series, Nintendo's Mike Tyson's Punch-Out and several others. The ambition of this alternation is to go aloft simple, game review, gaming magazines and iPhone apps reviews, and yield a afterpiece attending at what defines memorability and, game review, superior in bold design. In this tenth allotment of the alternation we will appraise some added of those archetypal moments area video bold designers assuredly got it appropriate and delivered a memorable, constant and accelerating gaming experience.

Half-Life 2: Years of perceived and absolute delays, a awful publicized cipher annexation and amaranthine belief fabricated up just allotment of the massive address arch up to the absolution of Valve Software's chase up to their mega-hit Half Life. The attenuate aftereffect that surpasses the aboriginal in about every aspect, Half-Life 2 appear to absurd sales and about accepted acclaim from bold critics and players worldwide. While aggravating to individual out an aspect of Half Life 2 to acclaim aloft others is affiliated to analysis a different, game review, snowflake, we can artlessly play it safe and focus on the game's accurate star, the force gun.

Manipulation of the ambiance in video amateur was not a, game review, new affair if Half Life 2 appear in 2004. Archetypal amateur like Lode Runner and next bearing titles such as Red Faction had acclimated these kinds of approach in the accomplished and managed to accomplish them an basic aspect of gameplay. However, area those amateur relied on ecology abetment as a basic of gameplay, Half Life 2 (HL2) acclimated it as the axial apriorism for its absolute gameplay strategy. As Half-Life will always be accepted for, game review, its crowbar,, game review, its aftereffect has become alike with the force gun, and it is this individual weapon/device that is the focus of this ablaze of praise.

One of the a lot of able-bodied accepted promotional videos for HL2 complex a blow assuming the amateur arresting a home from invaders. The force gun was acclimated in this video to advance accessories in foreground of the aperture in adjustment to block it from advancing, game review, zombies, to aces up and, game review, bung altar at said intruders and to accomplish, game review, added force defying tasks. This video served to adapt the amateur for what was to appear and edge the appetence of mod developers worldwide.

Despite this warning, players the apple over were absolutely extemporaneous for the absurd, game review, bound advanced, game review, in video bold weapon architecture that was the HL2 force gun.Perhaps the best aspect of the force gun was how abundantly assorted its acceptance was. Certain puzzles throughout the bold depended, game review, on able use of the gun in adjustment to abide advanced progress. At added points, the gun was, game review, , game review, analytical in acquisition enemies and commutual specific goals.

However, it was the non appropriate use of this, game review, apparatus that makes it go down in video bold history as one of the a lot of altogether accomplished and advised altar of all time. Uses of the grav gun included: throwing pieces of the ambiance at enemies (including acrylic cans, saw blades and accidental garbage), using it to, game review, body a arresting position for yourself, abolishment cars and, in the final sections of the game, using it to bung enemies about levels and at anniversary other.

For the purposes of authentic fun, the force gun in HL2 is one of the a lot of advantageous weapons in video bold history. The acumen this gun is aces of acknowledgment in this commodity series, however, is not due to its absurd fun factor, but is leveraging of technology and harmonization with video bold design. Artlessly put, the gun is fun, functional, abundantly accelerating and allows the amateur to body their own acquaintance, game review, and behest the way they will collaborate with their gameplay environment.

Fallout 3 Review

Fallout 3 is an RPG/FPS bold, game review, accessible, game review, for all above platforms(PS3, 360 and PC). It is based in a column apocalyptic apple with some capacity of mid - 20th aeon USA.GameplayFirst of all, the capital I can't sing the praises of the capital storyline in Fallout 3. I begin it rather annoying in fact,, game review, it has a actual beeline alternation of quests with actual little variation. The chance begins with the character, the alone adventurer advanced through, game review, assorted stages in age and eventually artifice from Basement 101 and adrift the boscage in seek of his father.

After award him, he dies actual anon and lets you, game review, backpack out the bedraggled work. The chance cannot be majorly criticized however,, game review, as the accessible and head attributes to Bethesda's RPG amateur accomplish any storyline assume akin and banausic in allegory with accessible exploration. One botheration about is commutual the final mission after-effects in the end of the, game review, bold completely, and the charge to reload a antecedent save (In my opinion, a above and accidental aberration on Bethesda's part) unless one has the amplification backpack "Broken Steel" which extends the storyline.

The apple in Fallout is in my assessment fantastic! There are two capital areas of landscape, the wasteland, which covers almost 2/3 of the map, and the Washington D.C ruins, which covers the rest. Abundant of the D.C area's anchorage are blocked by rubble, banishment the amateur to biking underground in alms tunnels to ability assorted locations of the city, about I anticipate this is a acceptable idea, and proves a nice aberration in backdrop as you biking (There is consistently fast travel). There are affluence of absorbing places to appointment in the game,, game review, for example:Paradise Falls - An alone arcade capital now citizen to a accumulation of slavers.

The Citadel - Clever abetment of the avant-garde day, game review, Pentagon now apartment the Brotherhood of Steel"Washington Museum - The ghoul cityMegaton - One of the two capital towns in the game, complete an unexploded diminutive, game review, bombRivet City-limits - One of my favourites, an aircraft carrier cleverly adapted into a city. The vaults - As able-bodied as your own, there are affluence of added vaults, all with their problems. For example: One basement has consciousness-expanding gas which will addle the amateur and aftermath a consciousness-expanding adventure.

Addition is citizen to abounding clones of "Gary", all will advance to advance the amateur with sledgehammers on sight. The characters in Fallout 3 are exceptional. All characters are absolutely articulation alive and interesting. Anniversary has assorted chat, game review, options, enabling, game review, the amateur to ask about their background/history and added atomic things. Characters accept circadian schedules, some, game review,, game review, of which are afflicted by the storyline, they sleep, go shopping, allocution to assertive added characters at approved intervals etc.

Creating, game review, a actual immersive and astute experience.Fallout 3 contains no "Factions" as such, like Oblivion did. About there are factions which, game review, a amateur can do quests with etc. Which will accolade you with goods. Some are friendlier than others and will acknowledge to you in altered agency as you accomplish assorted moral choices throughout the game. For archetype a amateur with complete Afterlife will be bolter by the Talon Company, a amateur of complete afterlife, game review, will be bolter by the Regulators.

Some factions to, game review, agenda are the Brotherhood of Steel, Enclave, Slavers, Ghouls and several added accessory factions, which a amateur hasty through the bold may discount such as the Family, Reilleys Rangers and Brotherhood Outcasts. Anniversary band has its respective, in abyss belief and accept a array of quests available. Whatever you may accept to play as, there will consistently be a band you may wish, game review, to try and fit into to accompany your playstyle.Character stats and attributes are analytic able-bodied done, a amateur will accept their "SPECIAL"(Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Agility, Luck)), game review, at the alpha of the bold and they will, to a assertive admeasurement abide the same.

Abilities on the added duke are added through a alternative arrangement as the appearance levels up, with a assertive bulk of credibility to agent to skills.Equipment, game review, and ammunition, game review, is actual able-bodied done. A amateur can access a ample array of weapons and armor throughout the game, from assassin rifles to mines and rocket launchers, its all there! There are absolutely no criticisms on the alternative available, as it is acceptable to accumulate a amateur altogether agreeable with their gadgets, about some weapons can be advised too "overpowered", even with aloft adversity levels, "end game" weapons such as the Gattling Laser and Experimental MIRV atom enemies in seconds, and can absolutely abolish any adversity from the game, about one is not answerable, game review, to accept these, and can calmly yield addition root,, game review, about you consistently get the activity that you are "gimping" your appearance by not using these weapons.

GAMEPLAY SCORE - 9.5GraphicsGraphics in Fallout 3 abatement beneath the class of "reasonable as far as avant-garde amateur go. In my assessment, game review, compared to some of the arch graphical games, some of Fallout 3's textures assume a tad chapped and the continued ambit appearance inferior, about this did not bother me too, game review, much, game review, . The explosions and gun animations are great, and characters attending far added astute than they did in Bethesda's antecedent RPG, Oblivion.

GRAPHICS SCORE - 8SoundSound may assume like a neglible agency in allegory to graphics, or even added so, gameplay. About it is an complete capital for captivation and authoritative that action perfect. Sound is by no agency exceptional, like in amateur such as Call of Duty, about it is good, and a lot of gamers will be absolutely agreeable with this. Explosions accomplish a abundant babble and all NPCs are articulation acted(as ahead mentioned). There are a huge array of articulation actors in Fallout 3 and this brings about a abundant faculty of alone personalities in anniversary character, absolute for immersion.

The bold has aswell a few beautiful homesickness orientated affair tunes, played through assorted radios etc. In the game, which is a abundant benefit to apperceive Bethesda affliction, game review, about the little things.SOUND SCORE - 9Other NotesI accept Fallout 3 can alone be absolutely accepted with a adumbration of roleplay on the players part. I begin it abnormally acceptable to archetypal my appearance on one of the factions (In my case, Brotherhood Outcasts), game review, and, game review, aggregate armor and weapons adapted to that band to body your absolute character.

Assassins Creed 2 - Review

The original Assassins Creed split gamers down the middle, some loved the innovative free-running system and unique story and settings,, game review, whilst others loathed the game due to a lack of variety in it's missions and simplistic control, game review, system. However the creators of Assassins Creed payed attention to these people, looked, game review, at what they loved and at what they hated and learned from them, and thus Assassins Creed 2 was born.

Once again you will be living the life of one of Desmond Mile's ancestors, more precisely Ezio Auditore da Firenze.

Unlike Altair from the original game, Ezio is no master assassin to start with and Assassins Creed 2 follows Ezio through a very large portion of his life (spanning roughly 30 years) A tragedy in Ezio's teen years moves him to seek revenge.

Thus over his lifespan Ezio becomes a deadly Assassin, and unlike AC1 where you were already a master assassin it is a welcome change to play as Ezio as he learns these skills through his experience. Ezio is also a much more likable character, game review, than the rather cold Altair (who makes an appearance in AC2 and plays and important part in the story) he's a charming Italian, and is well acted and played.

As you might expect the story deepens in AC2, as subject 16's background, game review, is slowly revealed and new information is learned with some amazing revelations at the end of the game. However, i'll leave this review spoiler free by saying the story is engrossing and keeps, game review, you playing.

Thankfully the modern day part of the game does not interfere to much, unlike the orignal game where you were dragged back into modern day fat to often with nothing to do in those little interludes.

For the few times tat you are brought back to the modern world it's for good reasons and some nice gameplay touch's. Desmond is less of a useless lump and now seems to have toughened up, making for some interesting changes in his character, as the, game review, game progress's Desmon also becomes an assassin thanks to the bleeding effect, which see's him learning the same skills Ezio does. This opens up many interesting possibility's for the next game.

The new economic, game review, system is the biggest and by far best change to the gameplay, players now earn Florins as they complete missions which can be used to buy new armour, weapons, smoke bombs, throwing knives, healing items and poison.

Money can also be invested in your own private, game review, Villa and small town which you gain access to early in the game. You can upgrade the town and villa, which in turn earns you extra money every 20 minutes (real time) Your villa also stores all your weapons, armour, collectibles and more whilst your town has many, game review, shops. It's a fantastic addition to the Creed world.

Ubisoft have also addressed the variety issue in many different ways. Gone are, game review, the investigation missions that plagued the first game, in it's place is a more natural and free flowing missions system which builds up to each major assassination.

It's almost taken it's cue's from GTA's mission structures and it works very well, everything seems, game review, far more natural now and, game review, flows better. They've also added in side, game review, missions, which are entirely optional throughout the game, these include assassination contracts, couriers missions, race's and even beating up unfaithful husbands. which takes me smoothly, game review, to the combat.

While the core mechanics of combat remain the same,, game review, Ezio is by far a superior fighter that Altair ever was, game review, .

Thanks to a massive increase in the range of weapons, you can now fight with mace's and massive two-handed swords and axes now as well, making for some brutal, game review, kill animations. The new Disarm move is fantastic, by fighting unarmed you can now counter and attack and steal your opponents weapon and get an insta kill on him. It's fantastic to watch as you disarm a massive armoured Knight and bring his huge two handed axe swinging down into his shoulder. Combat is improved by new enemy types as well, such as the Brute who is a massive armoured foe, and is, game review, best fought with your dual hidden blades or, game review, using the disarm technique.

Other enemies wield massive pikes or spears and can attack you from a good distance and are best taken out from combo kills, game review, .

Graphics are still amazing, and cut scenes are now present in the game, however the facial animations can sometimes be a little ugly. Attention to detail is still staggering and this is by far the best looking sandbox game yet. Venice and Italy as a whole, game review, look amazing as this game takes you through these beautiful cities, game review, and landscapes.

Animations, game review, are once again a joy to behold,, game review, Ezio moves, climbs and leaps with precision and grace and the combat animations are brutal to behold.

A raft of smaller additions also make there way into Creed 2, such as driving boats, faster climbing and extra equipments, game review, such as smoke bombs, game review, . You can now pick up dead bodies and either hide them or use them as distractions and the new smoke bombs add a nice extra tactic to your arsenal. Poison is introduced as well, you can now prick any person with a small needle to deliver this poison, which drives the victim mad and they will begin attacking people around them.

Use this on something like a Brute and he will most likely do some major damage to his allies as well as cause a great distraction. However the game does not make use of these items well enough, they get introduced but after that the game never forces you to use them, so many people will forget these abilities exist and never use them, as such the game should of had a mission or 2 after each item and skill is introduced where the player could get used to using these items and abilities. The hidden gun is a neat new feature as well, allowing for some nice long range kills, as well as your new Double Hidden, game review, Blades which allow for some satisfying kills.

Collectibles return, but in a much better form. Around the world there 100 feathers to collect,, game review, however you do get rewards this time round. There are alos 20 Glyphs which when found, act as puzzles which slowly unlock a video made by the illusive Subject 16. The new Assassins Tombs are a great addition as well, these indoor area's are parkour playgrounds, designed to challenge you i many ways. Some simply ask you to work out how to get to the tomb, others see you using precision and speed as you race around the area to hit switches in time.

Others provide enemies, game review, as well to test your techniques and often see you trying to chase down a guard through a fantastic chase sequence before, game review, he alerts the other guards. All in all, game review, there are 6 of these tombs, each one gives you a Seal and collecting all six is well worth the effort for the reward your receive.

All said and done Assassins Creed 2 is a fantastic game that solves most of the originals flaws and provides a breathtaking adventure and gripping story that will, game review, keep you hooked in its 15 hours of campaign time.

And after that you can always add another 10-15 hours in side missions and collectibles and just general mucking about.

One of 2009's best releases.

SCORE'S:

Graphics:, game review, 90%

Gameplay: 92%

Lifespan: 90%

OVERALL: 92%

Fight Night Round 4 Review

When I first ordered Fight Night Round 4 from my online rental account I was pretty excited to give it a try. First let me tell you that I love fighting games, UFC Unleashed was probably my favorite fighting game so far this year. However, after reading Fight Night's reviews I figured it had a good chance of pulling off the upset of my favorite fighting game. The game finally arrived at my house and I immediately put it into my xbox. My first reactions was that this game had some amazing graphics and the story telling of my young fighter began quickly with an introduction sequence on how to use the controls.

The amount of variations in punches, ducks, and blocks are, game review, huge. There is a different control for almost everything within the game., game review, At first this, game review, can seem like a scary situation for someone like me who has never played any of the Fight Night games.

After trying to feel my way around the controls I created a boxer in legacy mode. The game starts out with an amateur tournament and even with my lack of skills I was able to win all of my fights by knockout.

At, game review, that point I felt pretty good about the game, and that I would be able to get the hand of the game easily and enjoy my legacy career. In the legacy mode you are able to train your fighter typically once before every major fight. I found that the little training games they put you through to be very hard and that I was not actually help train my character. However, Fight Night has, game review, created an auto train setting for people like me who do not want to learn the proper training.

I continued on my legacy path and was able to beat, game review, most opponents until I reached ranking 20. At that point the game, game review, became difficult for someone like, game review, me who does not want to learn the specifics of ducking and weaving. I just want to get in there and throw hay makers and try to KO my opponent. However, the game is created such that you can not win after a certain point with punching alone. This part of the game frustrates me and really creates the bad review,, game review, game review, in my mind.

Like I said I don't want to dedicate to, game review, much time learning about ducking and weaving,, game review, I just want to punch someone. Therefore in my mind the game fell short of, game review, my expectations. However, if you are into that sort of thing this game is realistic and amazing. The graphics are superb and the game play is so realistic it makes amateurs like me not want to play it. So go pick up a copy and give it a try.

Best Xbox Games on 360

Smackdown vs. Raw 2010 Review: The latest installment of the WWE series, it is actually a pretty solid game even if your not a wrestling fan. The controls are easy to learn and gameplay, game review, is fluid. If you are a Create-A-holic like me, there are tons of things to do in this game. Create wrestlers looks, moves, taunts, gear and then create your own grapple finishing move or the new top rope finishing, game review, move creator. Then, create your own entrance for them. Then, create your own storyline! Yes, new also is the Story Creation mode.

If your a WWE fan, and love to be creative, you will want to pick this one up to carry home. If not, the gameplay will probably grow stale, game review, after a while. It's worth atleast a rental.

Left 4 Dead 2 Review: It's Post-Apocalypse. Zombies and mutant creatures run rampant through the streets of Louisiana, game review, . What do you do? Grab three of your buddies and shoot/hack your way to freedom through five good length campaigns, four different game modes, and an A.

I. "Director" that changes the pace(monster spawns, weapons and items, etc..), you will be playing, game review, Left 4 Dead 2 long after the evacuation choppers have left. My favorite game mode is Versus where you can also played as specialized Infected characters and try to off the survivors before they make it to the safe house. A Definite BUY for FPS and zombie fans.

8 Shotguns out of 10

Dragon Age: Origins Review Bioware has been perfecting the art, game review, of the RPG for years and this is the crowning jewel so far.

With combat you can choose to go on the fly and program your other members with in depth controls over their actions, or pause and, game review,, game review, give each member a specific action to perform on a specific target. Also, a lot of moral decisions are placed in front of the player, where a lot of grey area is involved, making have to, game review, look within yourself to decide what you would actually do. A lot of these choices do impact the story as well. This allows for a lot of replayability as well as all of the specialist, game review, classes(each character can have 2).

Since you only have to earn, game review, them once, starting a new game leaves them open from the beginning. You will, game review, want to buy this one, as Dragon Age has a lot of content, as well as added new downloadable content from the Developer.

Overlord II Review: Let's face it. Sometimes being the bad guy can be fun., game review, Add an army of hilarious gremlin-like minions at your beck and call, and you would have never thought pillaging the countryside could be so fun.

The controls, game review, take a little getting used to, but they are designed well and make controlling the different types, game review, of minions and your overlord not as such a daunting task as it may seem. You can also craft weapons and armor for your overlord, game review, using the souls of your creepy little friends. The minions are the key to all the puzzles in the game as well as unlocking items and areas. You can resurrect your favorite minions, who will equip weapons and armor(sometimes unique) from fallen, game review, enemies.

One annoying factor I found is the map on the game screen has no compass and turns with your overlord. This can make finding your way difficult, especially with the lack of landmarks in the game environment. The game play also can get repetitive after you have conquered your first couple of towns.

Borderlands Review

17,750,000 Different Guns. Literally.

I had incredibly high hopes for this game, I pre-ordered it about 6 months before it actually came out. The concept of combining my two, game review, favorite styles of gaming was very appealing to me, and luckily, this game did not let me down one bit.

The basic story of this game, game review, is you traveled to the planet of Pandora with 3 friends, game review, (for more info on the characters, visit the Borderlands website) in search of a vault filled with alien,, game review, game review, technology so you can become rich.

That is basically the entire plot line, you just adventure through the lands following, game review, a voice in your head that tells you who to kill and where to go to get closer to the vault. If you aren't familiar with the RPG genre, you start at level 1, and in this game the level cap is 50, so you can keep killing things and completing quests to gain experience to level up to 50. Every time you level up past, game review, level 5 you get a talent point that contributes to either your special ability, your shield, or your guns.

Right from the opening cut-scene I knew this game was, game review, going to be good, game, game review, review, . I played as Lilith, the Siren, and ran through the game in about 3 days with a total of 22 hours to complete every quest the game had to offer, coming across hundreds of the seemingly endless amounts, game review, of guns. After I beat the game I began my second play-through, where all of your enemies are larger and tougher, and in turn the loot is better as well.

I, game review, have to say that the game is nowhere near as incredible if you are playing by yourself though, you get less experience so the leveling goes slower, and the bosses are more difficult to defeat when you don't have your comrade close by to revive you when things go bad.

But regardless of whether you are playing it by yourself, or with 2 or 3 friends, this game is well worth the money.

With 17,750,000 (literally) guns, you're never grinding to find a specific weapon. The more you play, the better weapons you will find. Some weapons actually do some incredible,, game review, and unique stuff. Like a shotgun that shoots a wave as bullets, or a rocket launcher that shoots 3 rockets consecutively. You'll never find the exact same gun twice.

If you just head out on the main story line, I believe you could take this game out in, game review, about 10-15 hours playtime if you're power-housing through it with, game review, a friend or two.

I must say that the ending to this game is a little disappointing and the storyline is rather weak at parts, but when you're, game review, finding a new gun every, game review, 5 minutes and constantly upgrading your skills and abilities, the storyline is the last of your concerns, if just gives you a reason to, game review, go out and kill things.

I also ran across a few minor glitches in the game, mostly while driving the vehicle, but nothing big enough for me to desire to score this game lower.

The Scores (out of 10, 10 being the highest)

Playability: 9.5
This game is very easy to understand and control, whether you are an RPG veteran or completely new to the style. The FPS and critical strike (getting headshots) system work very well, and suit this game wonderfully.

Graphics: 9
A very unique style of graphics, and is VERY well done. I did not give it a 10 because sometimes the environment blends together when I feel like it isn't supposed to, (example:) giving the illusion that you can jump over something when you really cant.

Plot: 7
Without the epic ending I was anticipating, the game lacks a purpose. Also, I feel like as time goes on the plot matters less and less. The first few quest-givers you meet are real people that you feel like you're helping, but further down the road in the game it just becomes mindless killing (which, in this game is TONS of fun, so the plot was not a major factor for me). Moral of the story: Don't buy this game because you think the story is going to be great. (Buy it because you like getting head shots and owning psycho midgets)

Replay Value: 8.

5
This game does have a second play-through option which makes the loot, game review, better and the enemies bigger and with different names. However, it's still the same plot line, so it may struggle, game review, to grip your attention, game review,, game review, long enough to do it all again.

OVERALL SCORE
8.75

Although the plot won't quite reel you in, the immense amount of weapons, incredible co-op feature, and endless amounts of headshots and enemies to kill sure will.

Xbox 360 Mod Chip - Expand Your Gaming Selections and Play Import Games on Your Xbox 360 Console.

As a serious gamer myself, I love to see games before they hit our shores here in, game review,, game review, North America. But more than that, I am always looking for the hottest, game review, and most unique games I can get my hands on. Unfortunately, many of those games just don't come to our side of the ocean from Japan. Typically, since the days of the original Nintendo NES, Japanese, game review, gamers have enjoyed much more unique and often times much, game review, better games than their North American Counter Parts.

I've been very fortunate to be able to play many of these Japanese games while, game review, I was living in Japan, but when I returned back home to Canada, I, game review, simply could not find many of the games that I had played with such pleasure while in Japan. So I searched and, game review, researched and found exactly what I needed to be able to just put those Japanese games into game console and really start playing again. What I found was a Mod Chip, for my Playstation console, game review,, game review, .

And I've been using mod chips ever since then. Having most recently purchased and installed my Xbox 360 Mod Chip into my system - and I've got games from Japan on the, game review, way.

So Just what IS a mod chip? Let me explain. A modification chip or mod chip is a device used to play import, backup, or home brew games. Mod Chips first came into "fame" when die hard, hard core gamers who were tired of the slim offerings that were made available for them in the USA, wanted to get their hands on the often better and more unique Japanese games that were coming out for their game console.

This is nothing new, even the Nintendo NES has a device that allowed gamers to plug Japanese Famicom cartridges into their USA NES system so that they could play those really unique Japanese games, or the latest Mario offering that was only available (or came out much, game review, sooner) in Japan.

Mod chips are available for all the major video game consoles, including the Xbox 360, Xbox, Sony PSP, PlayStation, Playstation 2 and GameCube. Almost all modern, game review, console gaming systems have hardware-based schemes which ensure that only officially sanctioned games may be used, game review, with the system and implement regional lockout similar to the scheme used in DVD movies.

The specific technical nature of these DRM systems varies by system, and may include cryptographic signing (Xbox), intentionally unreadable sectors (PlayStation, Sega Saturn), custom optical media (GameCube, Dreamcast), or some combination thereof. Modchips are available, game review, also for some DVD players, to defeat region code enforcement and user operation prohibitions.

Mod Chips first came into "fame" when die hard, hard core gamers who were tired of the slim offerings that were made available for them in the USA, wanted to get their hands on the often better and more unique Japanese games that were coming out for their game console.

Modchips typically require some level, game review, of technical ability to install. Most commonly, modchips must be soldered on to a console's motherboard, although, game review, there, game review, are no-solder install kits (which instead rely on the precise positioning of electrical contacts within the case) which work with some revisions, game review, of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox hardware.

As console systems got better and better, a whole following of home brew developers starting making their own software for their consoles. Software like the Xbox Media Center (XMBC) as well as their own little games and programs to stream video and, game review, audio. But in order to play, game review, / run this software, users are required to be able to load unsigned / home brew code onto their system. This, game review, is where mod chips come in. Not only do they allow you to play the latest game offerings from Japan, which as stated earlier, are often much better both graphically and in the way of originality than the games that are for the, game review, North American market, game review, .

As with any new system, and the new mod chips that first come out - we're always hit with loads of "compatibility" issues. Much like when the ps2 mod chip first came out, they had chips (different, game review, chips) for each "version" of the ps2 console. And the Xbox 360 mod chips are no exception. The very first chips that came out were for very specific "versions" of the XBox 360. First it was a mod chip for the Samsung drives .. Which means that if your XBox 360 had a samsung DVD drive, then you needed to buy an Xbox 360 mod chip that worked on the SAMSUNG drive,, game review, to bypass the current firmware.

Then the Team Underdog chip came out, this chip, game review, had 2 versions. One for the samsung drives, and another one for the LG/Hitachi Drives. So again, you were "stuck" having to find out exactly which Xbox 360 you had, in order to select the right chip for your console, game review, .

Now, as with most developments in the mod chip manufacturing world,, game review, eventually, some very smart programmers and developers finally get it right. Naturally, it is common sense to assume that customers would be much more likely to buy a mod chip for their Xbox 360 is they could do away with the "version" checking, and buy a chip that they KNOW will work in their Xbox 360 console.

.. Of course, when they take it apart after receiving their chip, they WILL have to find out which model they have so they can use the right installation directions - but they don't have to fret or worry that the chip they have purchased may NOT be compatible with their XBox 360.

Much like any product, customers want the peace, game review, of mind of knowing that what they are buying will simply just WORK, and in the case of mod chips, will work in their Xbox 360 console regardless of the version of the Xbox 360 that they purchased.

In comes, game review, the Globe 360 Xbox 360 Mod Chip. The Globe 360 is the world's First Xbox 360 mod chip that is compatible with ALL DVD Drives currently on the market! Rather than having to figure out which model drive you have, as you do with other chips, the Globe360 Xbox 360 Mod chip works in ANY drive model to date. And the home brew software that is available is outstanding - and I expect it to get a whole lot better. My Xbox already acts as a complete media center, even streaming Google Videos directly from the Internet.

And my Playstation 2 has been transformed from just an awesome games machine to a DVD Player, DivX Player, MP3 Player, and streaming content directly to the console from the Internet makes it something that I could not do without.

To sum it up, if you have an Xbox 360, then you should really consider getting an Xbox 360 mod chip. Not only will you be able to protect your expensive investments by making backup copies of your own original games, and putting the originals away for safe keeping, but you'll also open up a whole new world of games that you simply would not be, game review, able to play otherwise.

There are truly very unique (and playable), game review, Japanese games that we'll simply never, game review, see otherwise. And if home brew or cool utilities, applications or add-ons are your thing, then having a mod chip is an absolute must.

XBox Game Violence vs Pocket PC Pacifism

News of grisly XBox-related killings is rapidly making the rounds within the relatively docile Pocket PC game community.

The MSNBC site recently outlined, game review, the jury's recommendations for six people killed over an XBox-related dispute in Florida.

After being evicted from the lodging where he had been squatting with his friends, Troy Victorino, 29, plotted revenge.

He returned with a couple of friends armed with baseball bats, where they summarily set about bludgeoning six other young people to death.

The most telling aspect of, game review, this unfortunate tale is that this was, game review, sparked by the property owner's 22-year-old granddaughter.

She made the unlucky decision to hold on, game, game review, review, to the assailant's XBox after having them turfed from the property, adding insult to injury.

Curiously, it was this last slight that proved to be the proverbial last straw and not, game review, Victorino's sudden social shift to homeless hobo.

The costly consoles typically sold for around $200.

00 CAD at the time of these slayings.

Some may say it was small wonder that this would serve as a catalyst for grisly, unadulterated video game related horror.

If you typically fall prey to politician-like spurious leaps in logic, you'll be counting down the days to an XBox 360 related incident as prices for this Cadillac of consoles soar into the stratosphere.

In Toronto it's retailing for $399.00 CAD at my local Best Buy outlet.

It's just enough to expedite the trip from mild mannered Pocket PC game, game review, geek to drooling chainsaw-wielding psycho after considering, game review, PST and, game review, GST taxes.

You may recall that 360 console prices in the thousands of dollars posted on EBay during the initial release of this game system.

Microsoft had struggled to keep pace with demand due to an unfortunate decision to start manufacturing en masse 69 days prior to release.

This led to ludicrosity, game review, in the form of violence-inducing, game review, EBay prices with units going for as much as $2500 CAD.

Stories of XBox crashes and overheating were just beginning to surface as I detailed in an earlier article.

What concerns me most are the spurious, irrational conclusions that are sure to follow. You're most likely familiar with the old, tired dogma linking violent video games to scenes right out of Tarantino's Hostel.

I'm not one to be a hypocrite about these things. I've played games in the gruesome genre, including some memorable spine-ripping finishing moves in Mortal Kombat or some frighteningly authentic execution-style kills in Hitman.

If you frequent my site you may have noticed that there is a distinctive lack of violent Pocket PC games reviewed.

This is hardly an accident as you'll be hard-pressed to find any for this platform, save for Killer Instinct Pocket PC emulator sessions.

As far as the Pocket PC game demographic is concerned, we're emulating the European mindset.

Developers generally eschew gory PDA game violence but can still encounter erotic PDA game downloads, game review, like the, game review, sexy Strip Teaser PPC game download, game review, over at the Softpedia site.

Solving puzzles in this game allows you to pause, play and rewind various striptease videos, presumably during covert corporate bathroom breaks.

I can accurately discern, game review, between real-life and virtual violence in my permanent starring turn as a pacifistic Pocket PC, game review, pansy. Maybe I'm a bit of a deviant.

Just the same, I don't think I'll be doling out $500 CAD for an XBox 360 right now. Microsoft's, game review, one fingered salute in the form of one wireless controller may just lead to beserker rage.
