Little girls just are different to boys. They like more social rather then competative games and don't enjoy getting wet and dirty quite as much as a boy if at all. If you are having a single gender party for your daughter here are some great games and entertainment ideas.
Treasure Hunt
Divide the girls into two or three groups. Give them a list of articles to find. These articles can be outside - long leaf, round leaf, feather, stone, etc. Or inside - crayon, video, pillow, spoon, doll, etc. Depending on their ages have between 20 and 30 items on the list. This will keep them very busy. Another version is to tell each group to find items for each letter of the alphabet - apple, ball, comic book, etc. They can become very inventive.
Sharing Secrets
Girls are natural information sharers.
Let them sit in a circle. Each girl has a number of beans or cocktail sticks. The party girl starts by saying "I have never ..." and names something she has never done. If any of the other girls have done this activity they give a bean or stick to her. The next girl to her right then repeats the phrase. Give them examples like - never seen Shrek, never danced with a boy, etc.
They also love playing broken telephone. The party girl whispers something to the girl next sitting next to her. She then whispers it to the next girl. The last girl says the message out loud. The party girl then says what the original message was. It is generally very jumbled.
Let's go Shopping
This activity is a fun way for the girls to fill their goodie bags. Divide the guests into two groups. One group are the store keepers and the other the shoppers. Give each shopper 10 coins or beans and a shopping bag. They then "buy" the party sweets or snacks they want, and place them in their shopping bag. The girls manning the stores are instructed that each girl can buy 1 item from each store. You can also have a "store" with party favors. When they have all spent their money the groups swap rolls and the other group can now go shopping. To ensure all girls get goodies have two sets of shopping items.
Hot Potato
Let the girls pass a ball around or throw it to each other while music is being played. When the music stops the girl left with the ball is out. You will see how fast the ball moves.
Bakers Galore
Get all the little girls in the kitchen for a baking and decorating spree. Choose something which bakes quickly like biscuits and cupcakes. You need frosting in different colors and a variety of decorating toppings. As party favors give each child an apron and chef's hat.
Fashion Parade
Little girls love dressing up, so let them do so at the party. Collect all sorts of clothing items - bags, belts, skirts, tops, shorts, shoes, etc. You could also get fantasy clothing. Place them in a room. Let the girls get undressed and dress up in the clothing. When they have chosen their outfits let them hold a fashion parade. Award each girl with a prize. Find something special about each girl's fashion statement, to award.
Do as I say not as I do
The birthday girl starts by saying "lift your arm" and lifts her arm, "clap" and claps. The other girls copy her until she says one thing but does another, e.g. says "hop" and then claps. All the girls must do what she says not what she does. Girls that don't are out.
Dancing Girls
Play different kinds of music - soft classics, quick marching music, fast pop. Let the girls dance to the music. To make it more fun place different instruments, ribbons and scarves in around the room. Let the girls interpret the music using these articles. This is a good way to calm them down for the candle blowing and cake cutting.
Here are more party games and entertainment ideas.
Remember the aim is for everyone to have fun - including you.

Up top, the information on the Amazon page says the game can be put on Linux or Unix systems, but there is nothing on the copy I bought that says this. Check this out, if you are buying to put on a LINUX system.
MahJong Challenge - This is a nice full screen play, with some interesting play options that will appeal to guys - tools, zapping. Backgrounds are available and you can add your own. The tiles are easy to identify, and see. The CD also includes: Space MahJong which is really cool, but the options during play seem limited; Midi music - some selections for the regular game are lame, but the midi-music for Space is great! The tiles for Sapce are great looking but navigation is different from the other game, and seems, well.... lacking in amenities. When you get to the point you have no more matches, a gui flies out, and you can choose to reshuffle, but no hints, and the exit is not obvious.
As I said, for the regular play, the midi-music is unappealing, also there there is no Gravity/Click versions included.
Others Mah Jong versions I have tried include:
Mahjong Master is elegant and relatively easy to navigate. The midi-music is soothing, but this is for the Microsoft DirectX fans, who like an "experience." DirectX is needed for some of effects. Lots of tile layouts are available but many (not all) are rather "noveau" (skulls, tulip, clock, et al). Hoyle Solitaire & Mahjong Tiles (Seirra) is a nice no-nonesense version of the card & Mahjong games and has some interesting special effects for the tile suites, but you need to keep the disk in the drive, for the full choice of backgrounds & special effects. Moraff Maximum Mahjong Vol 3 is wonderfully cheesy but way too much stuff ....this program is HUGE and has some real glitches.

I purchased this game about 2 years ago and of course had to install it right away when i got home to try it out. Right away I found myself playing the game for hours and lost track of time. I love the way the seasons change in this game cause it can seem so realistic, especially during the summer to autumn seasons when the leaves on the trees change colors just like in reality. The winter season in the game is also beautiful with several small and even quite large snowstorms that can occur througout the season. One time when I was playing the game it was winter time and the little weather guy on the television was calling for heavy snow and sure enough it snowed hard one night and my sim kids school was cancelled the next day. The graphics and sound on this game are quite good and it was certainly worth the price I paid for the game. The only complaint I have about the game is that I feel the creators could have went a little farther with the weather features in the game such as in winter having sleet and freezing rain be a possibility and not just the snow. Overall I give this pc game 4 stars under the categories of graphics, fun, gameplay, and sound quality. I do reccomend this to most younger and even some older video gamers to play!

I am so glad that I bought this computer game for my kids before reading the reviews on this site!
Look, we don't have a lot of computer games and we had just recently discovered the I Spy books about 1 year ago. We loved them so much that I do believe we'd read nearly all of them before I saw this game for sale. This excellent little collection of picture puzzles is not repeated from the books, so to us they're all new. It was like a breath of fresh air from a parent's point of view; games without that constant, annoying background music, the kids can play them quietly and actually learn something. The boys love it even more than I; they have been begging to play I Spy Mystery every day after their homework is done for the past week since they got it.
The game is simple. You select one of 13 folders, each is its own mini mystery with a theme (Mystery Meal, Locked Gate, Skeleton Key, etc). You have 3-5 "pictures" in each folder to find the hidden objects, and when you have solved all of the pictures, you are given clues to solve the final mystery. this involves a sharp eye, but also logic, good recall for details, and problem solving skills. Kids will also learn to employ multiple meanings for a word in their search, such as "bat".
I Spy Mystery, like all the books, is a fun and low pressure way to build the brain. I get caught up in it with them from time to time -- I've even added my name to the player file so I don't mess up their scores when I sneak a round. And now that we are intrigued by some of the folders, we will make an effort to find the other I Spy games. Thank God for Scholastic!

In part 2 of this series we took a look at Creative Expression and Escapism, two significant motivators of the common gamer. The week before that, we covered Challenge and Competition. This week we have a look at Socialization and try to tie it all together.
Social interaction is a subject on which we gamers take a fair bit of static from our non-gaming peers. Sometimes this is because they mistake differing priorities for introversion. Wanting to talk about the relative merits of the Western Plaguelands against Winterspring as a post 55 grinding location isn't really any different from wanting to talk about the strength of the Bill's secondary, its just that one of them is relevant to a somewhat narrow audience (give it time.) Sometimes, however, the criticism is merited. We tend to be somewhat socially awkward folk, in part because the hobbies in which we invest a sizeable amount of our time have rigid rules governing most interactions, making them poor training for the free wheeling reality of human discourse. For some gamers, the Social Interaction found in the gaming experience is a primary motivator.
Social activity in gaming occurs on many levels. At a very low level, gaming can be a reinforcer for existing social groups. Think of a group of friends getting together to play a board game or some Half Life. The social activity found in modern online games can be much broader in scope. MMORPGs, to which discussion of the current state of gaming always seems to gravitate, are essentially groups of people that already share some primary common link. The friendships formed through online cooperation and friendly competition can be one of the biggest draws of such games. Anyone who has ever stayed up later than they should because their guild needed them or because someone asked them to has experienced this. These online relationships are no less real, no less significant than their offline analogues. They are, however, different.
The interaction that takes place within a game is structured and often, online gamers see only part of one another. It is difficult for a group formed around a particular activity to bond as deeply as a group of friends that exists solely for the purpose of supporting one another. To avoid turning to diatribe on not forgetting your real loved ones we'll stop following that chain of thought. The important thing is that some game players are purely Socially Motivated. Such individuals thrive online, where other players can be met and interacted with. For these people, the heavier the social component of the game, the better. Interestingly, many games with a high degree of social complexity also have a large amount of the mathematical complexity that may drive away socially motivated gamers. In pure form, this type of gamer is seeking an experience that blurs the line between games and chat environment.
Challenge. Competition. Creation. Escape. Socialization. Five different motivators, all of which combine to make up the motivation of a particular gamer. We could add more, certainly, but these will do for now. So where do we go with this? I'm having to physically restrain myself from drawing a pentagonal map and plotting individual gamers on the five motivational axes. While it would look neat and might be an interesting topic for an esoteric role-playing text, it wouldn't get us anywhere.
A more useful tack, perhaps, is to think about what motivates us individually. Knowing yourself and what drives you can help you figure out what sort of games you should be playing and, more importantly, which will never give you anything but frustration. Understanding the motivations of others can give us insight that will better help us relate. Many arguments over what to do in online games arise because the different party members are motivated differently. A Creative and a Challenger aren't likely to crave the same activities from a night of dungeon delving. Nor are an Escapist and a Competitive going to even speak the same way about a game. For one, a game may be a world waiting for his immersion. For the other, a game is a matrix of numbers waiting to be solved and conquered. We all have a little of each in us and if we can understand what drives us we can both better interact with one another and increase the joy we find in gaming.

I have been playing the Battlefield series since BF1942 first came out. Infact Bf1942 introduced me to online multiplayer pvp. I was hesitant first that I will get mowed down by people half of my age (well I am not that old but not that young either hehe) but I have been able to hold my own ever since I have started playing this series and even some other online pvp games. Infact I think these onlines pvp games keep one reflxes as well hand/eye cordination sharp.
Anywho enough of the back story but just wanted to chime that this game is immensely fun and addictive infact I think it's the best entry in Battlefied series so far. I have stopped playing other Battlefield games and now I concenterate mostly on BF2142. They are about 14+ maps in BF2142 if you get the deluxe package which includes the expansion and is at a price you cant beat.
As people have stated the game is mainly online fps pvp game so you have to be online to play it and you must like to pvp in a fast pace gameplay with guns, tanks, aerial vehicles, turrets and other personal arnament. You can be a sniper, a engineer or basically anti-tank/air, support is as name implies supports you with extra ammo, deployable munitions and assualt which are the front-line soldiers with heavy weaponary. They are different modes to play in like conquest, assualt (take over bases more than the opposition) and my personal favourite titan mode in which everyone has to work together to take over silos all over the map to bring down Titan's (a massive airship) so it can be assualted or damaged slowly by the missiles. The maps are huge about 14+ maps rendered in great details, varied enough not to get boring and support upto 64 players for a massive war feel.
I work and go to college too so only have weekends to play. I spend most of my indoor free-time with playing Bf2142 or other BF series game online and time seem to just fly by with these games(testasment to the 'fun' factor). I even cancelled my world of warcraft account as I just couldnt keep up with the constant gear grind to remain competitive in pvp with that game. Speaking of which the best thing about BF series games that you pay for the game once and than jump in for your pvp dose whenever you feel like it. You dont have to do pve or spend endless time to gear yourself up to be viable in pvp. Bf2142 does have a similar gearing system or unlocks which rewards you with better gear as you play more and rank up or gain levels. But these upgrades unlike pvp mmo's dont break the game for you. These are enchancement which make you a better adversary but unless you use your skills wisely even a newbie who just got the game can kill you one-on-one too.
They are some cons to the game which I will list too but nothing game-breaking. First the much stated adware by EA. Its true that it does get installed by the game unfortunately and loads up at start-up to monitor your web usuage so the in-game ads show your preference. However, this adware is not designed to be in stealth mode and can easily be disabled in windows startup utility or if you have a good firewall it will auto-block this outgoing connection for you. Second yes the game have ads billboard but they are hardly noticeable and infact to me kind of makes the game world bit more alive seeing a real world ad. Last, this game does have issues with windows vista and 7 since it was designed for Win xp and lower. You need to first make sure to set the executable for this game on your harddrive to windows xp sp2 comptability mode, check the administrator option and hit apply. Than get the latest version of punk-buster and let it update BF2142 client and you are all set(punkbuster is good actually otherwise the game will be overrun and unplayable with hacker/cheaters).
Anyways I highly recommend the game for anyone wanting to play great online fps with a futuristic theme and with this price it can't be beat. They are lots of servers still out there and most of them are always full or near full.

I'm always impressed with how the Xbox 360 continues to be such a powerful game system even after so many "new and improved" systems have been released after it. There's no question the Xbox has earned it spot at the top of the video game industry by constantly staying a step or two ahead of the competition. Today I wanted to show you how to use Xbox 360 game downloads for your system.
A popular question we receive from Xbox 360 owners has to do with where you can find full xbox 360 game downloads. We figured we would throw together a quick article answering this question so that you can start downloading games if you own an xbox.
Option #1 - Download XBOX 360 Games
The first option is simply to hunt for websites that advertise having "free xbox game downloads" and see what you can find. It sounds promising but there are some pointers you need to be aware of before you download any games.
These websites have gotten a bad reputation because of all the viruses and spyware floating around. They aren't monitored by anyone so there are plenty of infected files that come from these websites. Many have been shut down in the past year because of this problem - you can never be exactly sure of what you are downloading.
The second biggest problem we hear about is that the download speeds are painstakingly slow on these sites. There's no one investing money in the website and are so many users that the downloads can literally take days to finish.
To make things worse, you will find that a large percentage of files from these websites don't even work. There are a lot of games that are "corrupt" and will never work on your xbox. It's a big hassle waiting so long for something to finish downloading only to find out it doesn't even work.
We just don't see the point of using these websites. You can put your computer at risk and waste your time all at the same time.
Option #2 - XBOX 360 Downloads
This option is a much better choice for people that want to download Xbox 360 games instead of having to buy new games each time they want one. You can download xbox 360 games without worrying about slow download speeds, "corrupted" files or viruses.
Because Xbox 360 downloads have become so popular, there are now websites that are run specifically for people looking to download games, movies and music for their system. These websites offer memberships that let you login and download any game you want by using their customized program. The cost is about $50 and you will only be charged this once for a lifetime membership (some will charge a monthly fee - stay away from these).
Considering that the price of this type of membership is less than the cost of just one Xbox game, this can be a huge money saver for people. You can download as many games or movies as you want (including new releases) and are only ever billed the one time.
The businesses that operate these websites spend a good amount of money to make sure that the download speeds are fast and that the selection stays up to date. Since they are in the business to make money, they make sure their customers stay happy.
We have included a link to a website where you can learn how to get a free trial at a couple of these websites at the bottom of this article.
Most people who start using xbox 360 downloads find it difficult to pay full price for a game ever again - it's a lot less expensive and more convenient. You will need about 5-10 minutes to register and the software you need to make the games work on your xbox is included.
I'm always a little surprised that there aren't more people using this type of service. It's a lot cheaper and easier than buying games at the stores. I imagine that many people just aren't aware of the xbox download services that are now available.
When you begin to use Xbox 360 downloads it's amazine how quickly you can build up a huge selection of games for your system. It's fast, easy and you can find just about any game you want. A small warning though - it's highly addictive!

I heard the buzz about Myst back in the mid-90s, that it was "ground-breaking" and an "entirely new approach" to a video game. For whatever reason, I never played or watched it played until last week (over 15 years later). So going into this game, I had absolutely no concept of the actual art, puzzles, or plot. Zip.
The version I played is the iTunes app, and I played it on the iPhone.
Please note: I didn't play it to test my intelligence, my problem-solving abilities, or to wow myself with the art; my goal was to immerse myself in the game and see how it holds up to a newbie's experience 15 years after first production. I beat the game on my iPhone after about a week and half of immersion, with about 30 hint reveals along the way. So again, my point was not to crack the game and prove my genius, but to immerse myself in the 15-year-old experience, give it a go, and see how it holds up to today's standards. Here's what I found:
GRAPHICS -- The graphics are obviously dated. However, there is an elegance to them that, when pared with the haunting music and soundscapes, is simply timeless. The game has something that no level of graphic rendering can ever accomplish and I'm not sure can ever even be learned, and that is style. And the game's open screen devoid of buttons, icons and controls presents a clean, beautiful interface that many game designers today are still in need to take a hint from!
PUZZLES -- The puzzles are challenging but not impossible, around 3.5 on a scale of 1 (being the game of Memory) to 5 (being figuring out the gnome's name in King's Quest 1...the Old Timers among us will remember) for most of the game. Figuring out how to traverse through the tunnel in the air ship was extra difficult, and figuring out what to do with the rose compass toward the latter part of the game was not easy either. But there are some easy puzzles that keep it balanced, like figuring out the pipe system in Channelwood.
PLOT -- Excellent. At least 4 out 5 when compared with other games I've played. Beginning the game in this lush world with no backstory, instructions, or goal before me sent the intrigue factor through the roof. I've played Myst knock-offs in past years, and even though their graphics might have been better (given that they are newer productions) their stories were dull compared to what unfolds in Myst. The plot developed at just the right pace, and I really liked the multiple ending options as well. My single and minor complaint is that the acting seemed a little bit overdone or cheesy at times but, still better than most in-game acting I've seen. I understand from the Making Of video that accompanies the iPhone app that the Miller brothers performed the parts, which is redeeming and interesting to note.
My experience with Myst was a 5 out of 5, and I am now aware why the game is a living legend. When Riven drops for the iPhone, there's no doubt I'll invest my $$ and time into that adventure as well.
