Review - Prototype

By Clay Scott Brown

New York is where Prototype begins and ends. Manhattan to be precise. I think I've seen my share of the nice place to visit, but wouldn't want to live there, city. Godfather and Grand Theft Auto and quite a few other 'adventure' games have focused mainly upon New York City. Problem is, New York itself is a Main Character... often too big of a character for anyone!

In Prototype, for the first time that I can remember in a Video Game, at least, New York City is really looking good. The city is very impressive in Prototype and the makers of the game have really done something correct for a change, they've been able to, for the most part, avoid the Dead Space of Video Game Technology, that vast space that is endemic to the Video Game Experience, where you have a large land mass and the need to fill it in. Prototype actually gives you a sense that there is actual life teeming in its New York City.

If you 'Drop' from the top of a building (something that you will do often in Prototype) to street level, there are large masses of people walking around with many things happening, Prototype doesn't bother letting you in on too much, is what it is, the buildings can't be entered, but they look like the real thing, and luckily night doesn't descend unless it's a part of the tale that Prototype is trying to tell. So here, finally, we have a story overtaking the substance of our complacent knowledge of reality and placing it in New York. The Island has never looked better, even though it is under a Plague!

Biology and it's myriad uses is mostly Prototype's game, you are more than likely familiar with what I'm talking about. If you're in any way familiar with modern entertainment then you've likely seen a science lab gone wrong and a monster running rampant. It's the Zombie Syndrome packaged into a young man, Alex Mercer, who is, in fact, the actual reason that there is a plague in the first place. Alex died releasing "The Black Light Virus" into New York Cities atmosphere and awakens from 'death' into a new sort of creature who can 'Consume' people and gain their experiences and knowledge. In this way Alex goes about finding "Who Did This To Him". Which is interesting since Alex is a thief and was killed while stealing from a Government Agency. I'd say that Alex did it to himself, but Alex is young and he may not yet see the world as being bigger than himself.

Prototype then continues with Alex searching for who he is, in this way he finds his sister Dana and together with her and a few other people Alex begins to awaken his new powers. The story is actually told as something of a backtrack. Having us play the events 18 days earlier from where Alex is, 18 days in the future. Alex is our future selves then. So its a "how did we get here" approach to things. In this time the city of New York begins to break out with the Black Light Virus, and people are generally as you'd expect, killing each other and destroying everything around them, typical humanity up to it's usual ways and means! So there are no surprises here! Alex meanwhile is often taking on tasks, or Missions that further his understanding of himself and the virus itself, he unlocks a great many powers, powers of which you will have to Purchase by means of Experience Points (EP), which can be gained by completing Missions or destroying and causing grief wherever you go!

I primarily focused upon getting all my Health Upgrades bought out, since that to me was the most important. At first the Missions aren't that difficult. But things do get harder as the game progresses, luckily Prototype isn't too hard, nothing is more frustrating than being unable to continue a Video Game because it has gotten too difficult. You'll have to 'Consume' certain important people during the game, where you sneak up behind them and 'absorb them'. After which, if the person is of note, you'll see a small film of their lives, mostly having to do with the military... these little scenes give you an idea of what is occurring behind the scenes and helps Alex unravel the militarys' plans in terms of himself and the deadly virus.

Alex himself is young as I mentioned, he doesn't seem all that aware that he is the cause of all this terror and the military has given him the name Zeus. Not a bad name because as Alex, you cause a lot of damage. I do remember, a bit later in the game when Alex receives his full body shielding and long sword, that I spent some time just mowing down pedestrians and the so-called Strike Team which is two helicopters, and a tank or two. After a time, this destruction began to pay off as my EP points went up pretty nicely, allowing me to buy new killer moves. There are all kinds of upgrades, and you'll probably find yourself going mostly to the upgrade section of the game to figure out which buttons to push to make these cool new moves happen.

Prototype is called a Sandbox Game, which means you can explore the city without having to be on a timed schedule. There are certain 'tests' (usually signified by Monikers placed all over the game map) that you can do to gain medals and extra EP points. Generally you have to get a certain number of kills in a specified time, these are called "Events" in Prototype, which is funny, because I don't think there is much "Event" happening to these little sidebar moments. This kind of thing is getting popular in Video Games of late, I like especially when I don't have to do these things. I usually try a few of them then I get one that's too hard and/or boring that isn't important to the game... to me these 'little taunts' as I call them, can get out of hand. I believe that the story needn't be too cluttered up by these 'arcade moments'. Still I'm not against these, but after entering a tank for the 5th time and getting blown away I finally decided that I could do without the 5000 EP for a bronze medal! I'll just stay as dumb old Alex then!

Everyone knows about the guy who does everything in every game, I'm definitely not That guy. I'd rather take a DIRTNAP (My Favorite New Word) and leave a mystery unsolved a time or two.

Now having finished Prototype I'm pretty well pleased by this game, it was actually a lot of Fun. Fun. I haven't much felt any for some time, and the tone of Prototype is to be commended. You get a sense that the makers of the game were having a good time just making it, and there is the Rub as Old Shake's would say. Sure these are pretty depressing events, but Prototype tells it's Armageddon story without the whining and keeps us interested until the end. Alex Mercer is enigmatic, I suppose, for a video game character he feels more real than most video game creatures. It is interesting that he won't take any responsibility for his actions or who he is! Instead he does blame others (Boring!) and the game agrees saying that he is something else now, funny though he still looks like Alex Mercer, at least his sister seemed to recognize him. Still Alex Mercer isn't Spider-Man, he isn't going to be looking into himself too deeply until his 20th birthday or so!

The final round with the Supreme Hunter was fun, although almost every Hunter in a video game looks like a knock-off of Resident Evil. It took quite a while to off this big bad wolf! I could have played many more hours of Prototype. There will be a Prototype 2, there is no doubt, this first one is very good.

Prince of Persia Game Series

By Kim L Smith Platinum Quality Author

Prince of Persia is a game that many people probably recognize as being around for a while. However, some people might not have never played this game before and are curious if it is even worth playing the game or not. However, I know that I have played every game in the series and enjoy paying them immensely. Here are two great reasons why you should play this game if you have never played them before.

1. Great Graphics

I know that with most of the modern day video games the graphics are absolutely mind blowing, but this series is no different. The graphics in the Prince of Persia games are done in such great detail that if you get a chance in the action pace to slow down some and look at the walls you can even gain the feeling that you are in Persia during the time period that is portrayed in the game which really makes playing the game worthwhile.

2. Game Play Flows Excellent With Storyline

Having played many video games I know that some of the games that I have played the storyline doesn't keep up with the game play. Which means you will be having the story told to you about the last level you just completed, but in Prince of Persia the game is set up well enough that the story and game play makes sense with each other. So that is a big positive when I play any game that the story is able to keep up with the game play.

I know that for me the Prince of Persia game series is very rewarding. If you would like to read even more information about Prince of Persia you will want to read this article.

EA Sports Active Wii - Superior to Wii Fit

By Patrick Daniels

Not that Wii Fit wasn't an excellent idea but it bored me a little. For an exercise program game it did not have enough of any type of physical challenge. If you are into playing and you want to get your body moving and work out then EA Sports Active Wii is a must for you. It is not too expensive plus you get two accessories with the game. One is a double handled resistance band. The other is a pocket, for the nunchuck, that can be strapped to your leg. These two are used with everything that you do in the game.

One awesome aspect is if you invested in the balance board and nunchuck of Wii fit then you can also put them to use with the new game. Now that's a money saver and an appreciated plus. Think of it as money saved. The game starts with the creation of a mini you otherwise known as an avatar. When you do this you are starting up the thirty day challenge. This is probably the biggest reason that it far exceeds the Wii Fit program.

The main thing with staying in shape is simply to keep on moving. One of the biggest challenges is not getting bored. This surpasses Wii Fit with that in mind. You get new stuff to do from the game. It plans it all out for you daily. The variety keeps you from losing interest and it is made to get you to your goals.

This is a definite selling point of this game, where Wii Fit fell short; EA Sports Active Wii really picks up the ball and runs with it so to speak. There is a lot of action and having the workouts so varied, makes you look forward to finding out each day what your workout will consist of. Plus I really like the challenge.

This game gives you the choice of what level to start with so you can clearly achieve your fitness goals. This will seriously work you out which is a switch from Wii fit. You will perspire and your heart will get to pounding. Your muscles will get nicely pumped up too. You really will be working out and playing a game all at once. This is so far beyond the original idea in Wii fit. It is a complete improvement with the physical activity. A good thing to spend your money on.

You will sweat with EA Sports Active Wii fit and love it. If you are wanting to get more active try EA Sports Active Wii Fit and you will be delirious.

The Most Realist Racing Experience is Available From Xbox

By Patrick Daniels

Although many have tried, there has never been a game that captured the true auto racing experience. This has all changed, recently, with the release of Need for Speed Shift Xbox, where all the excitement if racing is right in your hands.

The graphic are outstanding and give a real feel and look of a true simulated race track. It also has a feature not seen in many games, the ability to pick and choose every aspect of the car you race. From how the car looks to what you have under the hood, all the choices are up to you!

Another great experience with this game is the crashes. You are not only able to feel and see the impact, but you driver is also left stunned and disoriented for a few seconds. The game also adepts to the speed that you are driving so that the drivers head is vibrating and the objects that are passing all correspond to how fast you are racing.

And the way you drive is recorded and you are matched with races that are based on your skill level and driving abilities, which honestly makes for a better overall racing experience, since you will be matched with racers that are at your level. Racing has never been this competitive. Single player career mode is just as good as the multi-player mode, but for many the best racing comes from the online experience of racing others in the Xbox live forum.

The only way to describe this game would be: The closest racing experience you will have, without having to get behind the actual wheel of the car! It is honestly the best racing game that has been available on any platform, to date!

The latest racing game that has been receiving a lot of hype is Need For Speed Shift Xbox. It is a excellent game that has the realist feel of actually being on a race track. It is a game that the whole family can enjoy so get your copy today!

Tips For the Mario Kart Wii Game

If you have attempted multiplayer Mario Kart Wii over WiFi, then you will stand with us as we say that it is amongst the best online gaming experiences you'll ever experience in this world. The excitement of participating against fellow gamers and racing against them throughout several tracks is really exhilarating.

Just how exciting is a multiplayer game of Mario Kart Wii?

Picture this: you are controlling Mario's favourite go kart-style racer, and you're trailing at second place on the final lap. You're gaining speed, and the rival in pole place is in sight. You know you will be able to pip them on the next bend, as quick turn drifts are your specialty. The bend comes, you are right at their tail. You increase the gas and reverse simultaneously. You turn the wheel and drift right past the enemy.

Such is the excitement that can be had in a multiplayer game of Mario Kart Wii. You will not be competing against the PC AI. You will be playing against real folks from different regions of the planet. They are living, breathing, cognitive players who will respond accordingly to the scenarios encountered by each race. This makes every game more challenging, and finally, more fulfilling.

Do you aspire to become a better Mario Kart Wii player? Here are some tips which will assist you improve your game:

- Master the 'rocket start.' This is a staple of each and every Mario Kart game. Successfully pulling off the rocket start will give you an early edge in the race. To pull off the rocket start, press the accelerator button as quickly as the timer counts down to 2. You need to perfect your timing though, as being off for a mere millisecond will ruin the technique.

- Collisions are best avoided. As much as humanly possible, avoid colliding with other opponents as this will slow down your speed and it will take time before you build up to your top once more. Rather than racing side by side with another player, try and trail them, so you'd know where they stand. Then overtake your enemy when your boost power is ready. By doing this, you'll be far in front of them and out of crashing range when the boost relents.

- Either learn the way to drift or learn how to let go of the accelerator button. The majority of gamers are just impatient. They need to over use the gas at most times and run over each and every trap in a course, including walls on bends. However, you will not be able to pull off most turns at high speed. You will need to learn the way to drift or let go of the accelerator command to slow you down a bit, enough to make the sudden turns found in Mario Kart Wii.
