Nintendo Wii: enter the arena

By Raina Kelsey

After tasting sweet success with their earlier gaming console Nintendo GameCube, the Japanese multinational corporation – Nintendo now aims to take the surreal world of video gaming to people previously untouched by this revolution. Their latest gaming console – the Nintendo Wii is not only likely to eat into the shares of other two giants – Microsoft's X-Box and Sony's PlayStation 3, but also open up new areas of opportunity for the video gaming industry as a whole.

The Nintendo Wii – the latest gaming console of the company features a wireless controller with three dimensional motion detection capabilities. This kind of game control are produced for the first time, on a commercial basis. Thereby, video gaming is no longer about feverishly pressing 'control' and 'action' keys, but to simply guide the wireless controller as in the real world. This pointing device can detect motion and rotation in three dimension, so while driving your car at 150 mph, you simply turn the wireless control instead of pressing 'left' or 'right' for that drift you need to slide through a sharp turn!

This real feel of a game can attract many first timers to the gaming domain, thereby substantially increasing the market size. Ad campaigns like “Wii would like to play” have brought in people across a wider demography – from children to parents and grandparents into the realms of video gaming. No wonders, the Nintendo Wii has already outpaced one of the gaming giants in terms of number of units sold world wide.

Built wise, the Nintendo Wii is the smallest console of the company till date. The console is merely 44 mm wide and 157 mm tall. The systems weighs just 1.2 kg which makes the Nintendo Wii, the lightest of all three major seventh generation gaming console. The Nintendo Wii has an optical media drive that accepts both 12 cm Wii Optical Discs as well as Nintendo CameCube Game Discs.

Advantages of Playing Online Games

By Saul Rivers

The disadvantages of the internet in general and online gaming in particular are known to everyone. However, when it comes to development and improvement of thinking abilities, it turns out that playing online games has many benefits.

We all know that playing computer and online games is fun. Therefore, we cannot take our eyes off our PC screens even if the phone is ringing, our favorite TV show is about to begin or our dinner is burned on the stove.

All of us have already heard bad things about this amusing pastime. We all know that online games are addictive; they can cause you and your children to spend valuable time in front of the computer on the expense of work, school and family obligations. Playing video and internet games on a regular basis can isolate you from human companionships, distort your sense of reality, shorten your sight, damage your back and basically mess up your life.

Let's put it this way: if you or someone you know is doing nothing but playing online games, it is something to worry about. However, most online gamers tend to adopt a less radical approach towards their habit. Then, when talking about milder cases of addiction, online gaming is less harmful habit than watching Dr. Phil, for example.

Actually, the habit of playing online games has many advantages that the habit watching bad TV is lacking. Recent research has shown that playing puzzle and word games decreases the risk of Alzheimer disease while watching daytime television increases the risk.

Many other researches have proved the positive effect of playing online games on the youngsters' mind. Word, puzzle and trivia games enriches the children's speech; classic computer games such as Tetris benefits the kids' ability to focus, analyze shapes, think and plan ahead; board games like backgammon and chess can help in the area of thinking skill and so on.

While watching TV is completely passive, you are required to do nothing but stare, overhear and open bags of chips, playing computer games, still not an Olympic sport, require you more often to recall that grey substance inside your head.

Additionally, playing online games is less solitary act than most people think. First, many types of games, including shooting games, sports games, backgammon, billiard and chess, are two or multi player games in which players can compete against each other. Additionally, most gaming sites add several features that encourage interaction between gamers including forums, chats, multiplayer games and tournaments, etc.

The bottom line is that online gaming, if taken in a reasonable dosage, is the opposite of harmful. Thanks to many of the online games advantages and their contribution to thinking skill development, parents can allow their children to play them, and play them themselves.

Mahjong tiles: the real truth.

By grugno etto

Mahjong is really a famous online game and millions of people love playing it, but do they know what tiles represent? What are the names of every tile? In this article, I will try to explain it giving a short description for every category of tiles.

Mahjong solitaire, also known as Mahjong, is a solitaire matching game that uses a set of tiles. The tiles come from a four player game popular in Asia generally called Mahjong. The 144 tiles are arranged in a special four-layer grid with their faces upwards.

A tile that can be moved left or right without disturbing other tiles is said to be exposed. Exposed pairs of identical tiles (Flower tiles in the same group being considered identical) are removed from the grid one at a time, gradually exposing the lower layers to play.

The aim of the game is to clear the grid by pairing up all the tiles, obtaining as many points as possible while matching tiles in pairs. The game is finished when either the grid is empty, or there are no exposed pairs remaining. Of course the bones that are covered fully or partially cannot be taken to the top.

Mahjong tiles are 144 and they can have two variants, the former called Traditional, the latter European. Here I will tell you something about the Traditional tiles, which are divided into:

- Colors
- Honors
- Bonuses

Colors contain three categories ("characters", "bamboos" and "circles", which are also called "balls" or "dots") and numbered from 1 to 9. There are four tiles of each kind in every category, which sums up to 108 bones in the set. Tiles numbered 1 and 9 are called "the ends", and tiles numbered from 2 to 8 - "the ordinary ones".

Honors contain two categories: "dragons" and "winds". There are three kinds of dragons: a red one, a green one, and a white one, as well as 4 kinds of "winds" - east, south, west and north. Like in case of "characters" there are 4 tiles of each kind. It sums up to 28 Honors.

Bonuses contain 4 "flowers" and 4 "seasons". Both categories consist of one tile of each kind only, numbered from 1 to 4. Since there is only one tile of each kind in the set, BONUSES can be combined in pairs in any way - not only within a category but also within the whole BONUSES set. For example, SPRING can be combined in a pair with any tile within the FLOWERS category.

There are many sites where you can find a good graphical realization to see Mahjong tiles, but I think that you can find high quality graphics for Mahjong on the online game site www.popyeah.com. Good graphic, big community and play for free....not bad?!?

Game Consoles

By Raina Kelsey

In the '50s, when the first Computer games appeared, they used vector displays instead of video. However Video Game Consoles made their mark only during the mid seventies. Fierce competition between two main game consoles manufacturer of that time – Magnavox and Atari, had resulted in many popular video games like PONG, Odyssey and Smash. These video games grew immensely popular among the masses and thus paved the way for the next generation of game consoles.

Though the journey from the first generation of game consoles to the current seventh generation has been plagued by video game crashes and market slowdown, the gaming industry have always come up with ground breaking games and technologies to overcome the gloom of the market. For example, during the video game crash of 1977, almost all game consoles developer and manufacturer withdrew from business when Atari came up with Space Invaders. The game was an instant hit. Space Invader became so popular that most of the people at that time bought Atari game consoles just for that one game. Similarly during the mid eighties slowdown in game consoles business, Nintendo's breakout hit game 'Super Mario Brothers' had not only revived the industry, but also had set the stage for better graphic and sound quality among the next generation of game consoles.

Among the current crop of seventh generation game consoles, three major player rules the total global market, namely Microsoft's Xbox 360, Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii. Among them, they share much of the total game consoles pie. Each of these game consoles offers not just a superior game play experience but also a whole new set of connectivity tools and large memory pool. So the present day video gaming is much more than pressing movement and action keys on your game consoles. One can download games to their consoles from online stores and WiFi hotspots as well as compete against other 'real' gamers in the virtual world.

Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core Could Be Game Of The Year If It Was Released.

By Ben Brook

The Final Fantasy franchise has grown a huge cult following over the years since the first game was released in 1987. Fans of the series are now eagerly anticipating the release of the next chapter of the franchise which is called Crisis Core.

The Big Day September 13 2007

The release date of Crisis Core has come and gone so many times since the initial trailer was launched in 2005 to rave reviews. Missing the deadlines has not necessarily being a bad thing for Square Enix the developers of crisis core, as it has allowed gamers that are not aware of the Final Fantasy franchise to take notice and perhaps play the earlier titles. The game is due to be released on September 13 2007 whether it will or not would be anybody's guess.

Final Fantasy - After Seven Chapters Still Not Really Final

Final Fantasy was only supposed to be made once, but the huge following this game has had since 1987 meant that sequels were going to be inevitable. The reason why this series of games is so popular is that both avid computer gamers and fans of Japanese animation and story telling have fallen in love with this series.

Each chapter of the Final Fantasy franchise has been set in beautiful lush environments with great uses of Japanese art, animation and story telling it's like playing a character from a Japanese anime TV show.

Final Fantasy VII A Brief Look At The Story Line

Crisis Core follows the adventures of four young "Light Warriors" who each have special weapons that correspond to a traditional earth element in which they can destroy their foes, in this chapter they are the Four Fiends of Chaos. They achieve this by going to different locations and completing different challenges to vanquish the bad guys.

The good versus evil story line allows for different plot points and characters which is why the Final Fantasy series is up to its seventh chapter.

Final Fantasy will be available in both Japanese and English formats and expect many avid Final Fantasy fans to buy both the console and PSP versions.
