Classic Game Review: Renegade 1987

Following their crop of Konami conversions, Imagine have turned their attention to licences acquired from another Japanese coin-op company, Taito. After versions of Ark android and Slap Fight, comes Renegade, starring another pixel based avenger in the Charles Bronson mould. The scene is set: travelling across town, late at night to reach your girl. Lucy, you meet gangs of ruthless villains, crazed with blood lust by the full moon. They're out in force, eager to dispose of anyone audacious enough to enter their territory, and you're wandering right through their patch.

The fighting action starts in a tube station, where a gang of muggers attack, some armed with pipes which they hit against their hands threateningly as they circle round your lone form in anticipation. Jumping, kicking, punching and ducking, the aim is to spill blood and dispose of all the muggers. When only three members of the gang stay, their Boss appears - and like all the Bosses, this dude is a lot tougher than his acolytes. Capable of taking a lot of punishment before expiring.

Off Your Bike

Out in the open air next, strolling by the Pier where bikers zoom in for the attack, riding past and knocking you down unless a well- placed kick unsaddled them. Then a veritable choir of Hells Angels attacks en masses, attempting to pummel your frail form with their fists. A few arch-Angels are armed with chains, which they wield with painful accuracy. After disposing of the biker Boss the route to Lucy takes you through the back-streets of Tinsel Town, where gangs of rough, tough women object to the presence of a mere male and show their hatred by attempting to flay your hide, with clubs and whips! Big Bad Bertha is their Boss, a large woman who rushes around, elbowing you painfully until she's subdued with a few well-placed kicks.

Sharp Razor

Nearly in the arms of your beloved... but the last gauntlet has still to be run - the street leading to the meeting place, where a gang of razor-wielding thugs attempts to prevent progress. A single slash is more than painful - it's deadly. Surviving the close shave merchants, you enter one building where Lucy waits, along with a gang of the most vicious thugs yet met. And their leader isn't armed with a fuzz box - he's got a gun, and he's not afraid to use it.

Gratuity

This violent little number, which allows you to hit a man when he'd down - you can kneel on a fallen assailant and smash his brains out. Literally - isn't exactly mind- improving. But the violent touches add to the atmosphere and make Renegade all the more enjoyable to play. The gangs met on the jaunt across town ail have their favourite dirty tricks - for instance one thug grabs you from behind and holds you while another gang member beats you senseless, but hunters can be shaken off and then beaten to a pulp while they are down. You can fight dirty too, though, and can deliver a mean knee to the groin.

Classic System Rating: 3/5 for Gameplay and graphics. Worthwhile game to play and enjoy.

Rock Band The Game - Dear Santa

"Dear Santa:

I've done my best to be good all year long. All I want for this Christmas is a new kind of video game that will be better than anything you've ever brought me before.

Thank you!

Jimmy"

"Dear Jimmy:

You really did do a good job this year. Consider it done!

Santa"

Jimmy gets up Christmas morning and is thrilled to pieces when he finds Santa's gift. His very own copy of MTV/Harmonix's newest gaming release, Rock Band. If you haven't yet heard about this latest gaming sensation, read on!

Rock Band is the latest entry into the genre of music/rhythm games and the creative design crew at Harmonix has gone way above and beyond on this one. Its developers wanted to come up with more than just another video game. They wanted to step things up to a whole new level, and more than succeeded with Rock Band.

This innovative game allows you to play each of the musical instruments on your own or "jam" with up to three other "band members". Rock Band also brings an entirely new dimension to the world of gaming by allowing the players to gradually be able to perform live solos, on their own, and eventually as a band. Forget karaoke. it's time to "rock"! Each musical part, including a lead guitar, bass guitar, drummer and lead vocalist, has several levels. Each member has to work on improving their performance on one level before they can move on to the next.

Harmonix is also in the process of setting up an international online community where you can find new members to play in your band or just meet and compare performance strategies. There will also be new song tracks available each week so you can continue to add to your band's playlist!

Due to the incredible pre-release response, Rock Band is expected to sell out very quickly, so if you haven't already written to Santa, you'll need to make sure to grab a copy of Rock Band for yourself.

"Dear Harmonix:

Thanks for making my job so much easier this year!"

Fantasy Card Games - Why Play?

I began to invest in war games early in life. They often satisfied my need to create my own fun. Naturally they led me to electronic gaming and I would guess that this is similar for fellow gamers. Despite the fact that I felt led to enjoy these by responsible establishments, some shame remained when ever I wanted to play.

Comparison to video games
Among the most successful fantasy card games released in the last 16 years that I have played are Legend of the Five Rings, Pokemon, and Star Trek CCG. Many of these have been regrettably redesigned into computer games. I don't dislike video games for the reason that they are like a sibling to physical games, as both of them are a combination of the same ideas, but they both have opposite results in human development. It shouldn't go unsaid that the money spent on either is about the same. Contrasting production of digital games to fantasy card games; in 1996, 616 computer games and 17 fantasy card games were produced. I gathered this information from GamesAreFun.com and Wikipedia.org.

Influenced by Family and School
I suppose it's do to the fact that fantasy card games assist social interaction and planning that I remember being encouraged to play board games by my teachers at a young age, and was even cheered for when I volunteered to be the score keeper. I once had an assignment in elementary school for math class to create a board game. This was the first and probably the last time I ran home excited to start an assignment. The game I created was naturally my first of what would soon be lots of fantasy card games. This was the nudge to begin a long road for me, because I didn't stop creating, even though the majority of what I thought of was forgotten. Besides playing fantasy card games, school got me reading and writing fantasy books including The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Computer games still win out over books because there are roughly 9000 results in the database on isbndb.com for the fantasy genre, but 25 thousand listings at gamesarefun.com.

Socially allowing fantasy card games.
Fantasy has been more and more abundant as a genre for movies over the last 20 years. According to listings at IMDB.com, the ratio of fantasy titles among all other genres was 1/57 before 1990 and has increased to 1 of 26 and one out of 23 during the last 2 decades respectively. Despite this rising production rate it seems to me that fantasy card games are still thought of as 'uncool'. An opinion that doesn't go unnoticed by those of us who play fantasy card games. My own friends can be sifted into two groups of gamers; the closet gamers, and the proud promoters of individuality. While one of these groups will larp about in the park, the other sticks himself out of the way and conceals the title of his book.

Partially, writing this is an attempt to change which type I fall into and enter the realm of those who shamelessly love fantasy card games. I hope we will all abandon the prejudice that fantasy is desirable in computer games and T.V., but not preferable in physical games. But my real goal is for all of us to turn off the computer screen and try out a better game.

Here are some videos of strategic fantasy card games that highlight most of positive qualities abundant in fantasy. If you're looking to talk with a gaming community there is a forum prepared at this website that is specifically for fantasy card games.
