Golf - How to Prepare Before a Game

Golf is not just a game about hitting balls and craning your neck to see where the ball has landed. This is an intensely mental and physical game that takes preparation in order to have a successful game.

Why do I have to prepare?

There is a lot of golf club swinging, walking, driving around, carrying of golf bags, and looking for almost lost balls at the course. It's important that your body is prepared for this intensely physical event.

Another thing to prepare for is the mental aspect that is in every game. There will be a lot of thinking over on game play and strategies in each round of the game.

How to prepare?

1. Before leaving your home, check the latest weather report and wear the right attire according to the weather. If the weather is sunny, wear a cotton polo and pants.
You may also wear short if the club permits it. Wear a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. If you're expecting rains, bring your umbrella and rain wear.

Also before leaving, your golf bag should have been prepared before hand with not only the usual things such as clubs and balls but also towels, extra shirt, spare socks, sport drink, and shoes.

2. Arrive at the course an hour early and use the time to take care of your game equipment and accessories. Be early and you avoid being overly rushed to start the game. Being rushed affects the physical as well as mental aspects of your game.

3. After preparing your equipment, do proper warm up of your swings at the putting green, this will build your tempo throughout the game. This is where you can observe your ball and where you can control your speed accordingly.

Some players will get their heaviest clubs and start practice swinging slowly for 10 to 15 minutes. To maintain rhythm that you can use throughout the game, you can hit puts or chips before moving on to the bigger area, the range.

4. Proper exercises do not mean running around with your equipment, it means doing slow stretches of all the muscles groups that you are going to use while playing the game. Stretching for 15 minutes is good as it improves your range of motion by 17 percent plus your back will thank you for it.

Warm up is important because swinging is an explosive move and you don't want your back and other muscles to be hurt in the process because you did not warm up. If you want to enjoy golf for a long time, this is a must. A perfect example of a long time golfer is Tom Watson who at the 2009 Open was 59 and still able to swing his clubs with ease and smoothness.

Stretch your arms, back, neck because they are used in swinging the club. It's important that the legs are stretched too because when you swing your legs are the foundation and lastly stretch your torso muscles because this is where you get the power in your swings.

After warming up, there might be time left for you, you can stand aside try to stay loose through practice swinging. Remember that if you want to succeed in golf, failing to warm up properly sets you up for failure because you will lack concentration and would potentially hurt yourself.
