Sam Pocker on Monopoly: top ten tips for winning at the world's best-selling board game. Interview by Ashley Cotter-Cairns
ACC: How can you make 'regular' Monopoly more exciting?
SP: Play for real money. It's more exciting, it's potentially illegal (check your local and state laws first), and it keeps you more involved in the game.
ACC: How do you feel about the 'pass the dice' and miss your rent rule?
SP: Take your time on every turn. Don't feel rushed to make a decision, there is no clock.
ACC: Should you avoid debt in the game?
SP: Mortgage to the hilt after every color is spoken for. You need as much cash as possible early in the game. You can unflip when everyone else is flipped and therefore be the only player collecting rent.
ACC: Which version of Monopoly is the best?
SP: Don't play those licensed Monopoly games, they are too confusing and have strange values. I got my butt kicked at Disneyopoly once, it was embarrassing.
ACC: How do you feel about the history of the game?
SP: Respect your American heritage. This is a game based on Atlantic City, a disgusting slum on the Jersey Shore filled with smelly casinos, homeless junkies, and the seediest gift shops in North America. Stand tall, be proud!
ACC: What's a rookie error to avoid?
SP: Income Tax. With the exception of the first two rounds, always play for $200, the 10 per cent is a suckers bet. If you are so broke that the 10 per cent is cheaper, then you might as well just fold.
ACC: Is there a "killer" way to close out the game?
SP: If you own Boardwalk AND Park Place, mortgage everything else and BUILD BUILD BUILD. Save yourself enough cash to pay rent elsewhere, generally 30 per cent of your total worth, dump everything else into houses and hotels. One person landing on them can end the game and leave you victorious.
ACC: Monopoly's just for fun... right?
SP: If you take the game seriously, don't play with people who do not take it seriously. They will ruin your enjoyment and you will ruin theirs.
ACC: What about the 'criminal' element?
SP: If you end up in jail, roll as many times as possible before paying. If you have a 'get out of jail free' card, use it only in the early rounds of the game.
ACC: How do you feel about the rules for quicker gameplay?
SP: A Monopoly game can take 2-5 hours if played correctly. Allot this much time beforehand, commit to it and play 'til the end. This is the only board game which is truly like a day at the office, it's a lot of work and it can be very rewarding emotionally and intellectually, but give the game the respect it deserves, much as you would your career.
REMEMBER - Practice makes perfect! There are several titles for computer and video game systems available for you to practice with before playing.
