The Games People Play

The title of Kay Spang's book, 'Away Games' comes from the creative competitions involving a group of lesbians and gays from the Pacific Northwest on which the story is based.

How good are the Away Games? So good that a passing Olivia Cruise ship stops at an island to check them out when they hear of the gamers' presence. They even join in the festivities to help pass out the medals and honors. How funny are the Away Games? Imagine the hysterics and drama of a normal gathering of gay boys and girls-now picture them playing cowfolk, pirates, cops, soldiers and Olympians. You guessed it-too, too.

I love a book that makes me smile, and even better, one that makes me laugh out loud. Away Games did both, and though there were a few serious moments, the point of the story seemed that everyone involved should have a good time. I did!

Kay does a wonderful job telling the story. Her writing style is well paced and comfortable, making it that much easier to enjoy the games, although it would have been great if each adventure were a separate book. The characters were as believable as if they were old friends and I'm sure I recognized one or two of their attitudes. My complaint? As I closed the cover and wondered where I could sign up for the Away Games, I remembered that the book is fiction and proceeded to stick out my lower lip.
