Okay, let’s see here. I’ve got my myspace account, all my email accounts, my online banking account and entrance into my highly secretive members-only flashdance fan club. What’s the common theme here? Well, of course, each one of these very important aspects of my life require the use of a password. And RuneScape is no different.
The RuneScape password is actually a little bit different than the others. For one, it seems to me that the other accounts that I have utilize the password as a fairly static object. I mean, I created it and I log in with it and then I’m good to go and don’t give it another thought until the next time my computer gets fired up. But, My RuneScape password is different. I get going on the game with it. I, obviously, maintain my stats with it. I can be identified with it and use it in various forums. And without any questions, I am constantly being solicited for my password.
Oh boy, the things people tell me they can do with my password. All I need to do is send it over to them and before I know power and wealth are beyond my wildest dreams. Of course I’m a little skeptical. I am sure anyone who is running an operation that’s sole existence is to cheat, scam and hack the RuneScape system is of high quality caliber, but I simply seem to be a little skittish. Inherent human inadequacies abound in multitudes and are perceptible in any activity that one puts forth even the slightest of inquiries. And to even the greatest believer and ardent supporter of the positive nature of humans, this cold reality can easily lead to utter disappointment and a misguided blanket judgment on even those not guilty of the particularly applicable misdeed or digression.
How does any of this possibly relate to RuneScape? Well, as is most certainly one of the desired goals of the online adventure game, the virtual world RuneScape shares several characteristics with our very own world of blood, dirt and greed. This is of course obvious. Players live, die, need money, need health, interact with others, etc, etc. But, to me, this hardly begins to scratch the surface of what ties together the worlds of the solar system’s 3rd planet and that which resides within the 1’s and 0’s of your computer. To me its all about human nature; and unfortunately, as a natural cynic I often times find myself assuming the worst as a rule and anything better than that as an exception.
I must again inquire: How does any of this relate to RuneScape? What I’m saying is that in this real world of ours the historic injustices and systematic inequalities have steamed from such a large and long tide, that it’s as unlikely that any truly good news in the way of humanity is as fictional as a rabbit that misplaces eggs to celebrate the resurrection of some guy from Nazareth. But, here we have an opportunity to wipe the slate clean, to start all over again, but do it right this time. We have a virtual world that in fact even comes equipped with rules in order to maintain the societal fairness that we all publicly pronounce as important to us in the real world. Great. What could possible go wrong. What? Human nature--that’s what.
It would be impossible to move through the world of RuneScape for even a minuscule amount of time without gaining full appreciation for how many RuneScape hacks there are out there. The hacks are out there to cheat their way into better, undeserved stats and to cheat you out of yours. They want to make real world money, by hacking into the system and changing stats. I just arrived in a new city. I don’t have a map. I don’t speak the language. I don’t know what time it is. And I have no idea why everybody is rushing around so much and where it is that they’re going to. What do I want to do? Go home. But, suddenly, a stranger appears and offers me an explanation to the city’s layout and then of the language and the schedule of the city’s happenings and then all sorts of explanations of peoples activities. I’m definitely staying. I have just described for you my experience into the world of RuneScape.
Without the help that is offered by those familiar with the complex and confusing world of RuneScape, certain frustration and retreat would have been inevitable. But the RuneScape help that was offered to me came as a great relief and a pleasant surprise for two reasons. One obviously regards the logistics that are needed to understand the game, but the other is a little abstract.
RuneScape is a community. Well, actually RuneScape is a really, really big community. And as with any big community its really easy to feel shuffled to the side, disregarded and unwanted. Despite the fact that the history of mass-market games consoles only really stretches back two decades or so, there have been dozens of consoles in this time, and all-out wars to capture the market. The quality of graphics has improved amazingly in this time – try looking at the original Mario next to a modern game like Grand Theft Auto or Halo – although it is a matter of some debate whether gameplay (the ‘fun factor’) has improved to match.
Probably the biggest thing in games consoles today is the shift towards online gaming, led by Microsoft’s Xbox Live service. Online gaming allows people to play against each other all over the world using nothing more than a TV, a console, an Internet connection, and occasionally a headset to shout insults at each other.

Since the first pioneers of selling plats on Ebay, many have argued and frowned upon those that have ever purchased plats online. I recall many players harassing others with foul names such as "newb" and "ebayer". It has been over 5 years that everyone has been arguing whether the secondary market of trading MMOG money would ever be accepted.
Since the introduction of EverQuest platinum, there were probably more than 70% of players that wouldn’t even consider purchasing plats and discriminated against those who did. As of today, the numbers have been reduced extraordinarily. About 40% of the players now purchase currencies, 30% still disliking the idea and 30% of the other players probably does not care too much and may purchase some them selves in the near future.
Although online game currency is still a new trend to the online gaming community, it is getting popular at a very hasty rate. Within the end of 2010, I believe even the publishers themselves will support the foundation of the secondary market. Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) have now begun their own EverQuest 2 gold auction system and planning to start a new MMORPG in which they intend to sell currencies and items themselves. With their support, I’m sure the secondary market will be accepted over a period of time.
The secondary market is only as successful as the primary. With the release of World of Warcraft (WoW), there are now more than 4.5 million subscribers. A vast majority of those players are probably new to the MMORPG world. A large increase of subscribers means alot more potential for the secondary market. One gamer, who goes by the screen name Haylo, said he spent $10 to $20 real dollars a month on in-game platinum(all nonexistent, of course) to buy weapons and other goods in Dark Age of Camelot (DAOC), but would spend more if he could afford it.

World of Warcraft is by far the best and largest MMORPG out yet. World of Warcraft follows a long history of the original strategy game warcraft. There were 3 popular titles that were released previously that were also an extremely big hit. Warcraft, Warcraft II, Warcraft III and the 2 expansions "The Frozen Throne" and "Reign of Chaos". The release date of the game was on Nov 23, 2004. A year after its release and there are about 4.5 million subscribers and still growing stronger each day world wide.
World of Warcraft takes you to a 3D environment in the World of Azeroth. The World is the largest virtual environment ever created. You can explore through deserts, forests, mountains and more. It may take months before you can finish traveling through all of Azeroth. There are of course mounts such as horses, gryphons and other animals that can help you travel through Azeroth.
Along with the great 3D environment you are able to customize your characters looks in the highest of detail ever possibly invented. There are next to an infinite combination of faces, eyes, texture, size, weight, coloring to choose from.
